Louis O. Cournia

Louis O. Cournia Jr, 85, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, September 11, 2018, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. "Louie" or "Sonny" as he was affectionately known, was born at Crookston on November 8, 1932, the son of Louis and Ann Cournia Sr. He married Nancy Lou Hovland on December 8, 1951. Surviving along with Nancy are their eight living children and spouses: Deb Hanson of Crookston, MN, Louis "Skip" and JoLynn Cournia of Murfreesboro, TN, Jean and Richard Rock of Erskine, MN, Mary Jo Cournia and Sue and Lester Wilkens of Crookston, Tom and Violet Cournia of Moorhead, MN, Nancy Kay Kujawa of Rochester, MN, and Pat Cournia of Virginia Beach, VA; twenty-five grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; two brother's-in-law, Tom and Darlene Hovland of Cass Lake, MN and Melvin Podevels of Franklin, WI; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Preceding him in death, Louie has been reunited with his son, Dan; son-in-law, Lynn Hanson; grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Hanson; great-grandchild, Riley Knuckles; and ten siblings. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2018, with his grandson, The Rev. Bryan Kujawa, presiding. Visitation will be at the Cathedral on Sunday from 5-7:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, and will continue for one hour prior to the funeral on Monday. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Louie's name to the Villa St. Vincent or Cathedral School.
