Darlene Johnson

Darlene Johnson, age 79, of Gardar, ND passed away on October 8, 2018 at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND surrounded by her loving family.

Darlene was born in Starkweather, ND on September 30, 1939 to Neil and Christina (Boehmer) Hunt. She was raised in the Starkweather area. Darlene graduated from Starkweather High School and went on to attend Minot State University for teaching. Upon graduating, she taught elementary students at Tiber School in rural Edinburg, ND. After she married William Thordarson in 1960, they farmed in rural Gardar, ND until the time of his death in 1966. Darlene was united in marriage to John H. Johnson on June 25, 1967. John and Darlene farmed and made a loving home for their family in rural Gardar. Darlene did some work as a substitute teacher; then worked at the Borg Home in Mountain, ND for many years, primarily as the Activities Director.

Above all, Darlene loved spending time with her family, especially those times when everyone could be together for family gatherings. She enjoyed many hobbies including baking, quilting, china painting, gardening, reading, fishing and singing. She was an active member of Pembina Hills Lutheran Church, Gardar Ladies' Aid, Borg Auxiliary, and community activities. She had a strong faith that kept her positive during her 25-year challenge with Parkinson's Disease.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister Lila (Ralph) Gangl; four brothers Lowell, Rick, Carrol and Harold Hunt; and son-in-law Ron Lunde.

She is survived by her husband John H. Johnson, Edinburg, ND; and four daughters Danette Lunde, Crookston, MN; Suzanne (Scott) Ashpole, Cavalier, ND; Tammy (Jim) Zidon, Edinburg, ND; and Janelle (Rusty) Ekness, Eden Prairie, MN. She has six grandchildren: Nicole (Matt) McBride, Matthew Ashpole, Krista (John) Cahill, Abby Zidon, Noah Ekness, and Lillian Ekness. She is also survived by brother Ken (Linda) Hunt; sisters-in-law Verna Johnson and Ann Hunt; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be Friday, October 12, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Gardar Pioneer Church, of Gardar, ND. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home in Edinburg, ND; and again on Friday for one hour prior to the service, at the Gardar Pioneer Church. Burial will be at Gardar Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gardar, ND.
