THE FOCUS

With young recruiting in college hockey, it's hard to do a complete makeover in the months before a season, but Miami pulled it off with its defensive corps. Two defensemen flipped their commitments from Omaha to Miami—high-scoring Derek Daschke (seven points in 10 games) and 6-foot-6 Bray Crowder. They also pulled in Dartmouth grad transfer River Rymsha. The three new faces have been regulars for a Miami team that's off to a 7-3 start.

THE PICK

Miami's issues the past few years have generally been on defense and in net. It appears that the RedHawks have solved those problems this season with a re-made defensive corps and a confident Ryan Larkin in net. The high-powered offense has always been there. That will make this a difficult road trip for a Fighting Hawks team that has only played one true road game this season—and lost it at Bemidji State.

Miami 3-2; UND 3-1

NOTES

**** Former UND forward Jonathan Toews, the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, scored his 300th NHL regular-season goal earlier this week against the Calgary Flames. Toews is the third UND player ever to score 300 NHL goals. The only two who have scored more are Dave Christian (340) and Zach Parise (338). Parise entered Thursday night's game against the Kings just two points shy of 700 for his career.

**** St. Cloud State hosts Denver this weekend in a two-game series featuring a pair of first-year head coaches who are a combined 12-1-1 through the first month of the season. St. Cloud State's Brett Larson is 7-1 and Denver's 28-year-old David Carle, the youngest head coach in college hockey, still hasn't lost yet at 5-0-1.

**** So much for Bemidji State having to worry about the post-Michael Bitzer era. The Beavers lost their four-year starter in goal after last season. Their replacements—sophomores Zach Driscoll and Henry Johnson—have posted remarkable numbers through the first month. Driscoll has a 0.97 goals-against average and a .962 save percentage. Johnson has a 0.67 goals-against average and a .973 save percentage. Bemidji State is 4-1-1 despite only having played one home game thus far.

**** UND recruit and former Grand Forks Central standout Judd Caulfield had two assists in USA's 8-2 win over Sweden to open the Five Nations tournament in Kravare, Czech Republic. UND commit Cam Rowe stopped 15 of 17 in a 5-2 win over the Czech Republic in USA's second game.

**** UND's last two opponents, Minnesota and Wisconsin, will go head-to-head this weekend in a Border Battle series in Madison. The Gophers are looking for their first win since Oct. 7.
