GET TO KNOW THE BEARKATS

1) Sam Houston State is one of just three teams in the FCS (along with North Dakota State and New Hampshire) to reach the FCS playoffs each season since 2011.

2) Huntsville claims journalist Dan Rather and former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as natives.

3) Sam Houston State has one national championship, during a tenure in the NAIA. In 1964, Sam Houston State and Concordia Moorhead played to a 7-7 tie and were declared co-champions.

4) Huntsville has been called the “death penalty” capital of the world due to the fact that Texas executions are conducted at the prison facility located there.

5) The school’s athletic teams were named the Bearkats in 1923, and the belief is a “bearkat” is more of a mythical creature than a “bearcat”, which is a bear-like mammal.

THE CALL

Tom

Sam Houston State 45, UND 42: The Fighting Hawks can give the ‘Kats a scare, but they’re too unpolished to pull off the upset.

North Dakota State 38, North Alabama 14: The exciting non-conference matchup will be in Texas.

South Dakota State 56, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3: Same as above.

Vikings 28, Packers 24: The real Minneapolis Miracle would be avoiding the Aaron Rodgers Love Fest.

Wayne

Sam Houston State 24, UND 21: The game is a measuring stick for UND. But it’s not a season-defining game.

North Dakota State 41, North Alabama 10: North Alabama was a Division II power. It may be a while before it becomes an FCS power.

South Dakota State 70, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 7: Hope no one gets hurt.

Packers 27, Vikings 24: Earlier this week, Mike Zimmer said Aaron Rodgers walks on water. He was kidding. But he’s probably right.

Tom Miller

Miller has been with the Grand Forks Herald sports department since 2004. He's also a Grand Forks native and UND graduate.
