• Aug. 11-12: Fertile Conservation Club archery shoot, Agassiz Environmental Learning Center, 400 Summit Ave. SW., Fertile, Minn. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12. Long course consists of 42 targets; entry fee $20 adults, $10 for youth 12 to 17 and free for kids younger than 12. Fishing

• Aug. 12: Rod and Reel Rally catfishing tournament, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Hastings Landing Recreation Area on the Red River in Drayton, N.D. Entry fee $50, with a maximum 60 boats and a minimum of two paid entries per boat. Catfish prizes will be paid out to the top whopper catfish and the top slot catfish. • Aug. 18: Thief River Falls Lions 13th annual fishing tournament, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Red Lake and Thief rivers near Thief River Falls. Mandatory rules meeting at 8:30 am at the Huck Olson Memorial Civic Center. First prize of $1,000 to be paid for the largest fish caught in three different categories: Walleye, Northern and Other. Entry fee $30 per adult and $10 per youth 12 and younger; limited number of boat passes available for $5. Brad Dokken

Brad Dokken is a reporter and editor of the Herald's Sunday Northland Outdoors pages. Dokken joined the Herald company in November 1985 as a copy editor for Agweek magazine and joined the Herald staff in 1989. He worked as a copy editor in the features and news departments before becoming outdoors editor in 1998.  A Roseau, Minn., native, Dokken is a graduate of Bemidji State University.
